Getting around blocked ports?

i recently started uni to find many ports blocked.. i have IE and msn working after typing in proxy details but things like mirc, online games , voice comms etc etc dont work as they cant connect..is there a way to push these things through a port i know that works like 8080 ? thanks

i'm not sure what 'uni' is, but i think you're going to have to port forward those programs in order for them to work. for port forwarding i always go to http://www.portforward.com. The website gives a list of programs/firewalls and how to port forward so your program will work.
 
uni = university (a.k.a. college), and i highly doubt he would be able to get into the schools router to set up port forwarding.
