getting better wireless

i live in a dorm room where im not supposed to go online from my room. so there is no way i can move the wireless base. i do get like 1 mbps wireless from my room but is there anything i can do to make my wireless range wider so i can get better wireless?
 
hmm, not really, you could try looking into high-gain antennas to connect to your network card, but then if your integrated on a laptop then your screwed.

on a laptop? i dont think you can swap network cards unless you can solder your hardware in the laptop lol. at least i thought they were built in...some maybe be replacable.

for desktops you can get better cards and better antennas.
 
my computer teacher at school actually just hookes up a wire (not sure what type) from his wireless antenna to the copper pipes in school, he says they work great. lol

its better i think. it wil work with all those types instead of when u upgrade from B to G u gotta buy a new card. get one that supprots both if u can afford it.
 
b's the slowest at 11mbps. G's one step up having 54mbps, super G-s at 108mbps i think. What's A? And they're all backward compatible.

a is new. supposed to be loads better. i duno specs but Google does.

lol, you probably moved your computer around a bit and the antenna gets a better connection. but thats odd.

i dont know how old this thread is, but you can get pcmcia wireless cards and usb wireless cards that can function if u disable ur integrated wireless card...to increase reception...there is also an inexpesive thing u can buy that you plug in the wall power outlet and it increases the signal strenght of any internet around you...
in my case...i had "low" 2mbs connection in my room, and with this device it went to full power....i'd give you links but im lazy

G-s is a theoretical 108mbps, but it never get near it (same goes for all of them really). When they ratify the 802.11n we'll start see an improvement

802.11g is backwards compatible with 802.11b, meaning that 802.11g access points will work with 802.11b wireless network adapters and vice versa.

802.11b supports bandwidth up to 11 Mbps

802.11a supports bandwidth up to 54 Mbps and signals in a regulated 5 GHz range. Compared to 802.11b, this higher frequency limits the range of 802.11a. The higher frequency also means 802.11a signals have more difficulty penetrating walls and other obstructions. Because 802.11a and 802.11b utilize different frequencies, the two technologies are incompatible with each other. Some vendors offer hybrid 802.11a/b network gear, but these products simply implement the two standards side by side.

802.11g attempts to combine the best of both 802.11a and 802.11b. 802.11g supports bandwidth up to 54 Mbps, and it uses the 2.4 Ghz frequency for greater range.

a and b were releases at the same time (dispite rumours)
