Getting data from hard drive in laptop with dead screen

Hey guys,

I have a toshiba laptop that when you turn it on the screen remains blank. I tried plugging in an alternative display, but no luck. I brought it into a computer repair store and they said the motherboard is fried. They want 80$ to get all the data from the hard drive, is there a way I can do this myself?

You can buy a 2.5 to 3.5 HD adapter from Ebay for a few dollars then you can plug it in a desktop to retrieve data or you could purchase a external usb case to mount the hard drive and plug into any PC.

If all he is doing is pulling data off, he doesn't need a 2.5 - 3.5" HDD adapter, can just plug it in and leave it loose in the case, it won't cause it any harm not being screwed into the case, so long as he doesn't plan to start flinging his system around whilst doing it.

If a desktop isn't available though, then an enclosure and another computer will be needed.

Wrong!!!

Ide Laptop hard drives cannot physically connect to 40/80 pin ribbon cables and do not have a power connector as power is obtained in the ribbon cable.

If it is ide HD it will need adapter as connections different to desktop HD.....I'm not sure if latest laptops use sata since I do not work on them any more.!!!

Who said it was IDE?

Assuming it is a laptop from the last 5 years, it will be using SATA, which is just a standard 2.5" drive with the exact same connectors as your standard 3.5" desktop SATA drive

Who said it was not ide!!! I'm sure ARB10 will confirm this if my advice was wrong... Who said all new laptops in the last 5 years use Sata.

I have a laptop Acer brand purchased just on 3 years ago which has an Ide hard drive.

You assume too much.


Hi Linkin... ARB10 mentioned in his post that he tried an alternate display.
