Getting some new hardware... need advice

So I've had my desktop for a year and a half to two years now and I am a pretty big gamer I guess you could say.

Lately, I've been having some overheating issues with my 7900GT video card due to what I believe is a flaw with the card after talking to a few people about it and doing some research on my own. One part of the card overheats and won't stop even after I installed an after-market cooler onto the card.

So I've finally decided to get a new card, most likely the 8800GT. I am also considering getting a new sound card as I have heard better sound cards can increase your FPS by up to 15 sometimes and I enjoy a better sound quality. The sound card I was looking at is the Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeGamer Fatal1ty Professional.

So what I need is advice as to whether both cards are a good choice, whether I will need more than a 500 watt power supply (which I currently have), and if the card will be compatible on my rig.

My system specs are as follows:
Processor: AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+
Motherboard: (Sckt939)EVGA nForce4 SLI Chipset SATA RAID Dual PCI-E Mainboard w/GbLAN
2 gigs of ram
Sound Card: Sound Blaster Audigy 4 SE
Video card: Geforce 7900 GT 256MB 16X PCI Express

it would work fine, but i must say that it will create a huge bottleneck with your processor, that card is far more advanced then the processor
 
1) Putting that aftermarket heatsink on voided the warranty.

2)
Rosewill 600W
Rosewill 750W
OCZ 600W
OCZ 700W

3) BOTTLENECK
 
Did not know I had a warranty on the card to begin with and after talking to a bunch of people they said that nVidia isn't doing anything about it. If my processor creates a bottleneck what should I do?

Get a better processor. There's nothing else you can do. Might go with Intel...

No, you would need a new motherboard. i would atleast get a x2 5200+ with am2 socket Motherboard or Intel counterpart ..everyone in here knows more then me about Intel im sure they will let you know witch is the best way to go.(im really sure lol) i play alot of battlefield 2 and im always the 1st person to a jet and thats all i care about lol if you have any AMD questions just ask!
 
Socket 939 motherboards are outdated. You can upgrade the processor, but it will be more expensive than upgrading to a whole new motherboard + processor.... which would overall be better. Budget?
 
i wouldn't worry too much about it bottlenecking if you don't want to spend any more money. i'm on a p4 (although an x38 motherboard) with an 8800GT and i can play COD4 and Crysis on very high settings @ 1920x1200

And I can guarantee you that upgrading to a E2140 or even a E2180 could gain FPS x2...
 
Aren't the FX series of processor's pretty good for gaming? I pretty sure their socket 939 but I don't know if the price has gone down any.
 
I've got a decent amount of money, I mean I could buy an entirely new computer, but that would relatively stupid considering my computer isn't all that outdated... yet. I'd consider getting a new mobo and cpu, and I just ordered my 8800GT. But if I get a new mobo and cpu, I'd like it to last more than 6 months without being completely outdated.
