I have no clue about servers. So I will just tell you what I want and have.

I have an old dell desktop that I want to convert into a VENTRILO server.

Specs:
Celeron 325 2.53GHz L1-16 L2-256
512GB 3200
80GB HDD @7200RPM
running XP

What do I need to set up this server? I dont want to be playing for a vent server every month.

Thanks

you can download the Vent server software and run it for free as long as you dont have over something like 16 people on it at a time.

other then that you wont need nothing else besides your broadband connection and settup the port forwarding in your router.
you will have to assign the system that it runs on a static ip address
and setup a free DYNDNS account to monitor your WAN ip address and make it easier on the people that want to join your server.

its all real easy i have ran TS and Vent servers before as im sure alot of us here have.

Also verify with your isp that this is allowed. I know with insight and comcast they will block your entire connection if they find a server becuase it "takes too much bandwidth" according to them when my friend called because his was blocked.

All isps I know of dont allow you to run a server of any kind on a residential account, they will block your account for it. Now if you pay the extra for a bussiness account then its ok.

I have ran TS, Vent, RunUo and a WoW servers on mine but
I never had more then 5 people connecting in from the net.
I think if you dont go crazy and keep the traffic light they will never know
or wont care cause they know most of us would call there competitor.

you will have to find out what ports the isp blocks so you can setup
your server to use a port that is not blocked.
