Getting the most out of new Router

Hi folks,

I just recently purchased a Netgear N600 Wireless Dual Band Gigabit Router (WNDR37100-100NAS) today. My desktop is in the dining area and the router is pretty much in the living room. It's really about 6 to 7 steps away from me, but I do not have it hardwired because of a door that is in the way and because I do not want a wire just going through the living area from the dining area.

I was wondering if updating my wifi card on my desktop would help with signal or better strength?

Current wifi card on desktop is Dell Wireless 1506 802.11b/g/n (2.4GHz)

I am puzzled on why I only have 3 bars while I have my desktop up above the ground. I would think it would it would be fairly high enough to get a good signal from my router.

As for the router I have it placed on a end table which is next to a lamp.

Any help or replies are appreciated! Also if any other tips that I may do to help with connection is a +!

I did mention to Radio Shack that I would just try this router out and see how it works out for me.

I really was looking to get this router at Best Buy.
