Getting the Right Cooler

Hi all,

I am new here, and not sure if this is the right forum, but I'm sure overclockers will be able to answer my simple question.

First, I am not trying to overclock... I have enough trouble keeping this thing cool to begin with. What I am trying to do is get the CPU cooler. So, I bought a heatsink and fan; but I did not read correctly and got one that did not say it was meant for my processor—at least not on the label.

This is what I got, and this is the processor I have. What I wonder is whether or not a cooler meant for an 1800 will work on my 2800.

I have done some research, and it says that the 1800 runs hotter than the 2800, and I am not sure whether to assume that therefore the cooler for the 1800 has a greater allowance and allows the chip to run hotter or whether the cooler for the 1800 has to be better than for the 2800 to keep the hotter CPU cool.

I just wanna play MechWarriors without my PC crashing :(

Any advice and expertise is greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Jon

hat graphics card are you trying to play it with?

Your options are really limited as far as a cooler. I just looked around for about 15 minutes and could not find a thing. The MASSCOOL one is about the only option.

What TIM (thermal paste) are you using? That can make a big difference with temps. If you are not using Arctic Silver, OCZ Freeze or MX2....you should grab some. Also, look into way to mount a bigger fan on the heatsink. It only has a 60mm fan pushing 20 CFM of air. I am thinking about putting an 80mm fan on there. That will be a huge improvement, an 80mm pushing about 35 CFM with some good TIM.

Another issue is the processor itself. The XP 1800 is very old, from 2001 actually. No matter what you cool it with, it is going to struggle playing almost any game released in the last few years. I think it is time for an upgrade. Your actually lucky the game even starts.

The Athlon Xp 1800 goes for like $10 on ebay.
