Gigabyte DS3 RAM Options

Can anyone find me some RAM for a DS3 PLZ? I need it to be overclockable to 900-1000Mhz. As most of you know the 965 boards use 5-5-5 or 6-6-6 with 1.8v. If I do not find some good RAM for the DS3 then, I will go with an EVGA 680i.

I highly recommed the Corsair XMS2 series RAM. I have the 675Mhz Corsair XMS2 TWIN2X RAM, and have overclocked it to 1000Mhz. I can also confirm it is compatible with the DS3, because as you may know, not all RAM is (due to the default voltage setting).

I really don't think it will go above 2.0v, and I have chosen Corsair 2Gb 800Mhz 1.9v, and that is pushing just a little. I would like to be able to boot it up with the same RAM and run it with the same RAM. Not having to use another set to get into BIOS and change the settings, I guess you see what I am saying. No. The RAM booted with 1.8v. But I would recommend you change the BIOS settings to +0.1v on the DDR2 OverVoltage setting. Oh, and you'll need to manually set it to run at 4 - 4 - 4 - 12, otherwise it will default to 5 - 5 - 5 - 15. ;)
 
Okay, let me get this straight. I know I will need to change the voltage to 1.9v or more for the RAM's best performance. But, why would I need to change the timings? Is it because I want to OC? I would like to OC that RAM to 1000Mhz. Could you please step me through this?

Ok. If you want to get to 1000Mhz, set your RAM to +0.2v, and the timings to 5 - 5 - 5 - 15.

You should be good to go. Then, after a while, slowly begin to bring the timings down to 5 - 5 -5 - 12.

It's quite simple really. :)

Well, when you loosen the timings to begin with, it makes the overclock more stable. So, as you slowly make the timings tighter, you'll be able to know at what point you reach instability. :)

Tightening the timing improves performance. Lower timings = better performance. I'm not sure how badly the timings affect performance, but yes, you can keep them at 5 - 5 - 5 - 15. That is currently what I have mine at.

Generally, 1000Mhz @ 5-5-5-15 would beat 800Mhz @ 4-4-4-12 (I think...).
 
Why do they make the 965 run default like that? You would think that they would want something that ran for best performance and optimized itself to the best settings. That's just strange

Hmmm, well, I'm not too sure. I think it's so it maximizes compatibility. I think that is why the Corsair 1.9v RAM works. Because it runs it at 5-5-5-15 default, it can have it @ 1.8v and still work.

I bet if you were to try running the RAM with 4-4-4-12 timings @ 1.8v and it wouldn't work (since the rated performance requires 1.9v).
