Give me a desktop better than my current laptop

I noticed you laptop cpu is only 1.7ghz which for a slim isnt bad but most mid-high end desktop cpus nowadays are dual/quad/six even eight core each core normally at 3+ ghz so you will notice a huge improvement.

Id say build your own desktop, its not particularly hard. Will give you the chance to pick what you want. Knowledge whilst building the computer and not to mention its fun.

you can build a decent desktop for $1000 dollars to play games etc. id go for a quad core with 4gb ram, 2gb dedicated graphics card, 1tb hdd, 450w psu, decent motherboard etc, on a minimum.

It all depends on what you want to do such as if you wanted to overclock the ram and cpu you would need a decent cooler, unlocked cpu, performance ram etc.

But if you just want it for gaming kept on the stock cpu and ram settings, im pretty sure someone will give you a parts list for $1000 for a nice machine.

do you want to build it yourself or buy one from shop?

I would like the parts list to build it myself.

I currently have my laptop overclocked 100% of the time, so if it's possible it would be a plus. Would it be possible to salvage the HDD's, or the RAM from my laptop for use in this build?

I think the best bet would be to sell the laptop instead of taking parts from it. You could take the HDD out of it yes but not the RAM as laptop RAM is not compatible with desktops. Add the extra cash towards the build to increase specs say.

I know how it feels ive been using my sisters laptop because i sold my dual core i5 3ghz laptop to go towards my desktop build. Its horrible, it runs at about 80% load just at idle
This is at around 60-70c too!. When using a browser its at 100% constantly as the cpu is like 1.4ghz.

But your laptop is a quad i7, which is good. If you sold it you could pay for the desktop build. With the fact its only 1.7 on each core is not too bad giving a total power of 6.8ghz, which again isnt bad, on a decent desktop build with a mild overclock you could get 16ghz+ total power so quite an improvement.

How much do you think I could get for it? It is aprox 4 years old. I believe it needs a new gpu fan, a re thermal pasting, and the battery no longer works.

You can definitely find a replacement fan on eBay, if you know which one you're searching for. Also, you could easily reapply thermal paste yourself. Looking at eBay listings for your laptop, some fully working models are going for about $500-600, so I bet you could make at least $400.

I came up with this build for you today:
http://secure.newegg.com/WishList/PublicWishDetail.aspx?WishListNumber=23183105&Local=y
I didn't include a case, because that's really a matter of personal preference. I figure if you make some money selling your laptop, you'll probably have enough money for a ~$1400 build, right?
Also, I know that you don't want too big of a hard drive, but if you're willing to spend a bit more you could also go with this one:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822236244&Tpk=wd5000hhtz 500gb
It's not only bigger, but also somewhat faster.

I have one question that I'm having some trouble finding out. What is better for gaming, amd or intel CPU?
It varies. Any Intel Sandy/Ivy Bridge or Haswell quad-core will work fine, as will any 8-core (actually 4 module) AMD FX-8300 or FX-9xxx series CPU.

okay i finally have enough money to get the build. The only problem is the power supply is out of stock on newegg. What would you recommend I do?
