Going to overclock....

Yes I am planning to overclock, possibly today. My CPU is Socket 939 Athlon 64 3000+ running on a Gigabyte GA-K8NS Ultra. My current temps are about 28 Idle and 40 At MAX.

Anyway, I have decided I do NOT want to overclock my RAM, so I will be setting up a divider, what divider ratio I don't know yet. My stock voltage for my cpu is 1.4v I upped it last night to 1.425 and did a 12 hour stress prime 2004 and it went fine.

My FSB is at 200, and my CPU at 1808MHz. My goal for the first attempt is 2.0. My overall goal is 2.3, If It starts to get around like 47 Full load, I may want to stop.

So what should I do now? Setup the divider? And should i overclock using the BIOS or easytune? A utility that came with my motherboard.

Thanks!

frequency doesn't increase heat much. voltage does.
also, if you up the voltage of course it will be stable, thats what voltage does... makes it more stable at higher clocks. you may want to up the frequency before even touching the voltage at all, see where you can get. if you aren't satisfied then up the voltage a bit (maybe one step) and then try upping the frequency again. do stress tests whenever you've gotten to where you think you want to be. if its unstable, add some voltage or decrease the frequency.

also, in the bios i'd suggest turning on an automatic shutdown feature for when the cpu gets too hot.
i set mine to 60C, the lowest temperature i can set it to.

Heya

Well,

I have the Gigabyte GA-K8N Ultra-9 - nForce4 Ultra mobo and an Athlon 64 3000+ which is very simmilar to you. Let me tell you 2.5Ghz is a piece of cake for a Venice 3000+. I would recommend setting 280Mhz Core, 1.5Vcore, 3 LDT multi. That should work without a problem. However, I am not sure if your mobo will handle such a high core frequency.

What!? , I have this board ( Gigabyte GA-K8N-SLi-Pro ), the bios is a bugger to overclock in, once you get over 209FSB the system wont POST, and if it does it just keeps restarting, Its a known issue with these boards:( , posted on loads of forums, just google it and you'll see what all the problems are, Im thinking of selling this board soon seing as Iv'e had SO many problems with it.
Id advise you, if you want to overclock your cpu on this board, do it within windows and use something like easytune. I have a Evo33 and have managed to get a stable overclock of 2.6Ghz:)

Well

I can go to 300Mhz Core no problem! I guess it depends on the model but my Gigabyte board is a very good overclocking board. Unfortunately, the core frequency is locked at 300Mhz :( From what you are saying BOOTUP5, the PCI-e locks probably did not function right.

we are you setting up dividers anyway, you need to run the ram in sync as much as possible; dividers are a sure fire way to encroach on performance gains, especially on AMD setups
that geil ram will handle way past ddr400

Thats the problem, the BIOS that comes with it ( and all updates including F9) do not have pci-e locks!, most people are currently waiting for gigabyte to introduce a new bios for this board but there is a huge delay seing as all gigabyte say is that, we are not working on this issua at the moment as the problem is to do with overclocking, which voids your warranty and most average users do not have a problem with.
