Going without my main system for a bit...

My 6800GT running at 67*C can't be great for the GPU, so I decided to purchase an Arctic Cooler NV5 Silencer for my 6800. I read it's suppose to really help out the 6800GT(it uses 2 slots like the Ultra cooler does) and it's suppose to be more quiet. Good choice?

If you guys are wondering why I'm without my machine...I just had to get inside my machine to get the old HS off my 6800(yeah, the new HS hasn't even shipped yet :P) I figured I'd go on and tear apart my main system in hopes I spend less time on it and more time with school :P Well, I also cleaned up inside my computer and have the 6800 back in there, but with no heat sink(so I guess it's best not to power it :eek: )

67C Really not all that high for that graphic card especially if you took that after playing a game. Even if that the idle temp it not all that bad. I believe the geforce 6800GT dont even start slowing it self down until 115C. If you get to the 90-100C I would start to worry but 67C would not worry me much for that graphic card.

Uh.... since they rated out to 120C before throttling i dont see how you got this conclusion ...

Again, the comment about neccessity ... but the NVSilencer is a nice cooler ... just make sure you are aware that lot of people mention contact issues with the core so you may want to have a file ready :)

If you think that's bad, my card goes to 90C at ultra load! When I downclock to reasonable levels, it goes at 80C max. That's very high I know, but supposedly it should not kill the card. It's slowdown temp is set at 127 Celsius. Hmmm.... I want to get a Zalman or something instead of the Arctic because my Asus card has large mem heatsings and they would obstruct it.

Yeah well theres two things about that Jan,
1. NV43 has different heat issues all of its own, usualy heatsink contact pressure related
2.NV40 and NV43 are waaaaaaaaaaay different when it comes to heat
3. Do be careful about replacing the cooler since IIRC the ASUS uses nonstandard power config

Yeah, I saw it could get pretty hot, but I just don't like the idea of my equipment getting so darn hot... Heat is a computer's worst enemy, right? If I could prevent it, I might as well.

As for the contact issues...yeah, I saw that after I purchased it... I hope I don't run into any but I guess I'll have to file it down if I do :mad:

Well heat is the worst short term enemy ... voltage is the long term killer ... explains why people can still fry their comps with exchange coolers or N2(l)
