this is just a basic computer, it will be used for internet, word, and multi-media. is this a good setup or does it need improvement?

keep in mind what hes doing with the computer. 512 is plenty.

For a basic system that's probably acceptable however please realize SiS chipsets are horrible.

Dont know offhand if a Sempron route would be cheaper or not but worth considering

id go for 1 gb of ram not that much more $$$

Not necesarily required for a "basic" system and it is an extra 12%
