Good bye Firewire

I just gave up trying to get my Acomdata firewire external H.D. to work everytime. I would switch it on and sometimes it would show up, but many times it did not.:o

There Tech support tried to help but nothing they offered fixed the problem. I have a fairly new HP computer running XP service pack II and everything has worked great.

So I just gave up on the Acomdata fire wire drive and bought a Acomdata USB II drive. And it is found evertime I switch it on.:)

I have read that firewire is on it's way out because USB is now as fast and better supported. Just what I read.

When it worked

It was fine but it just was not being picked up everytime I switched it on and this was just not something I could live with.:(

USB has never been as fast as Firewire, and as far as I know there have been no improvements in USB. Firewire on the other had is faster and there's the newer 800Mbps standard.

As for your problem, I doubt it's firewire in genreal but something with the enclosure or your computer. I have a USB/Firewire enclosure and it has never given me any problems. Well, the problems I have happen on either USB or Firewire.

USB 2.0 has a top speed of 480Mbits per second

FW has 400 mbits per second

FW800 is 800mbits per second

The only major difference is FW is a constant speed, where as USB is burst speed. So, you may be 480mbps but in reality that is only once in a while, since it is a burst speed technology. That is why you see it being used with digital video and digital audio because of the constant speeds.
