Good with computers, but this one stumps me!

Can some one help me?

I just built a new computer. 8 gigs ram ddr2, 500gb hard drive, AMD phenom 9550 quad core processor at 2.2 ghz.

For some reason, my machine keeps on freezing! I have reformatted, and still the same problem persists. Ive got AVG complete anti virus and nothing is showing up in that department.

This may contribute to the problem... my dvd burner randomly stops showing up on my computer. Just stops responding and the machine acts as if it is not present.

Everything ran great until this thing started freezing... could it be a hard drive issue? Perhaps a video card issue? Any idea where to start?

Thanks!!!!!

All drivers are up to date.

4 sticks of ram at 800mhz

When it freezes, the loading light stays on and doesnt flicker or anything. Totally stalls out... then when i restart it, there is a good chance that it freezes again at the windows boot screen.

BTW this is a real version of windows and not hacked.

heard a story about AVG causing freezes and lags on vista 64 if you have in in place before a certain windows update in place. i'd reinstall, do full windows update, then put avg back. oh yeah mem test too....

You can try running memtest. Also you can take the hard drive out and put it in another computer if you have one and run Western Digital's disk check tool. Both tools are free. I'm leaning towards bad controller or possibly cables. If the DVD drive just disappears, it could be the cable or the controller it is plugged into. After awhile the controller the hard drive is on could fail too.
