Google Chrome OS same as Chromium?

I'm a Windows user. Never used a Mac except like in the 6th grade. I once installed Ubuntu, but didn't stay committed to using it. In terms of browsers, I've been using Firefox for a long time. Installed Chrome browser once, then uninstalled it about a year ago. Decided a few days ago I'd reinstall Chrome and set it as my default browser to give it a chance and possibly get a new experience.

I knew about Chromebooks and I know they're almost like netbooks in that they have really small screens. Other than that, all I know is that they have like 16 gig SSDs, a small amount of RAM, and just about everything you save is saved in the cloud.

So I got to wondering if I could install the Chromebook OS on my PC to try it out. I saw this: http://www.chromium.org/getting-involved/download-chromium and I saw this http://download.cnet.com/Google-Chrome-OS/3000-18513_4-75329145.html In CNET, they talk about there being a difference between Chrome OS and Chromium. I'm really confused :confused:

Can anyone tell me the difference? (if there is any)
 
I use chrome on windows and have a new chromebook. And I can safely say, Chrome OS is awesome for ONLY browsing the web. Anything else is a no-no. It's fast, but heavy flash won't run very well. Unity support isn't there, so pretty much no 3D games, Chrome OS is very similar to Chrome, just you have a log on screen, a desktop and wallpaper and some apps pined to your task bar. The little ram and small ssd is fine.

What's heavy flash? If you said just "flash won't run very well", I wouldn't know what you mean by that either. Do you mean Chrome OS won't run well off a flash drive? I've never tried installing anything off a flash drive, so I wouldn't know.

What do you think of the 11.6" screen. Is it crazy difficult to get used to? My Dell XPS 13 has a 13.something inch screen diagonal. I thought I wouldn't get used to that, but it's fine. I love being able to carry it around with just one hand from one room to the next without any fear of dropping it since it's so light.
 
To better answer your question since I had the first consumer Chromebook after the cr-48 and at one time had Hexxeh Chromium build Flow, Lime and Vanilla on my vaio the big difference between Chromium OS and Chrome is pretty big. Right now Hexxeh is the only one maintaining the daily builds of Chromium OS and I have noticed his different releases can be quiet unstable or does not support a lof of hardware. On a important note is that chromium OS is open source which means thing like Flash are not support, there is a series of crazy commands you can type in to get Flash installed but I personally would just find it easier to buy a chromebook, you would be amazed at how much we still need flash.

Flash can be a little heavy on chromebooks I think is the best way to put it, it can use up some resources but that is why I would wait intil the end of May when Samsung is suppose to release a refresh of the chromebook giving it a quad core arm cpu which is much needed. Or look at Intel based cpu's since the current arm is a little less powerful then the intel Atom, Hp makes a chromebook with the dual core Celeron cpu which packs a way bigger punch.

Chrome OS can do about anything Chrome can do to include playing 3D games with the exception of racing and first person shooter since most of them use the Unity engine which is not currently supported on any Linux platform but Chrome OS is suppose to get support by the end of this year. That does leave you with a lot of turned based games and I am not a big fan of mmorpg but space time studio has a few in the genre that are pretty fun to play.

I think the 11.6 inch screen is good, I love the lightness and smallness of the lappy. The screens biggest problem is the dullness. I mean, Youtube uses flash. Games use flash sometimes. Well, games that use a lot of flash can be hard to run on the Chromebook.

I found a Chrome OS download that's much easier than going through all the unnecessary steps that Microsoft says you have to go through...I think.
