Got a free laptop(gateway M-6308),needs a lil fixing.Would appreciate some help.

I know for sure the batt is shot.I am running it without the batt now.It will run just fine for about 30 mins.Then it will completely shutoff,black screen no shutdown.Does after 30-35 mins.I cleaned the fan really good & it has plenty circulation,not a heat issue.
Here is the issue I believe.The HD says 2.05GB free under the red bar,then right above says 0% free.On backup it says 30% free.

I would like to do a DBAN.But I have 2 problems.
1)I don't have a vista disc,but have the factory OEM code on the bottom of the laptop.
2)What if it shuts itself off in the middle of running DBAN?
I can try to just do a factory restore,but it may shutoff in the process also.
But I think the HD really needs to be wiped clean.
Should I try to remove as many programs & files as I can before trying either?
I tried to remove macafee,but it shutoff when it had 80% off it done.

Forgot to add,DBAN is derik's boot & nuke.Wipes all nook & crany of data off HDs complelty.

see if you can order the recovery disks from Gateway, it probably wont be free but it should be too bad. you own the license its stuck to your computer so they are just supplying you with media.

Or you could install Linux on it.

Could be a bad battery, how old is the laptop? You could probably find one of those online for about $100-$150

I know its bad batt.It will say,plugged in.Not charging.I been running it w/o the batt,w/power supply & it stays on alot longer.Im not really worried about geting a batt yet.It won't leave my room.I can get a new OEM batt for $35 w/3yr warranty.I want to try and do the factory restore soon.Seems like it does fine until I try to delete anything.
Its the actual authentic microsoft product key for windows vista premium.Says it all around the tag its in.Can still read it,but barely.
 
yeah if you dont have a recovery partition, i would contact gateway and just see if they can ship you some CDs. If you cant read that key you can use a program called belarc from belarc.com and you will be able to find your product key from the report it generates.

Update-Did the full factory restore successfully!Ran about 2.5-3hrs straight with no problems & didn't shutoff once during the process luckily.
But once I got loged in & my desktop started to load...bleep:mad:.
I think I hit the nail on the problem now.Im going to place my bet on a bad power supply.It still works,but I think the supply is geting old & isn't giving enough constant power to keep it running.When it reaches a certain temp,it loses some power im guessing.Im on it right now.

no problem i think i was confused on what you had going on... i must of overlooked your ability to do a restore.
