Got A Hd Problem

k so this is wuts up. i just bought a 250 gig maxtor hd. i made it my slave and my 40 gig for my OS, so i was using both hd yesturday perfectly. when i turned my comp on today i got the error( error finding OS(or something like that) on boot up. so so i disconnectred the ide cable from the 250 gig hd, and the computer started up fine, but when the 250 is connected it wont start up and says it can't find the OS. andybody know wuts up. i've tried two differn't ide cables and i've tried switcing from slave to cable select and all the junk, nothing seems to work...
 
how is the HDD set for a slave drive? Is is on the second IDE connector on the ribbon cable or is it manually set to slave on the HDD?
 
well i set the hd(250gig) manually to slave by swatching the plastic thingers(jumpers), i dont know what you mean by the ribbon cable...

the 40 gig is set to master
 
ya the bios reconizes it but as a 136 gig hd because my computer is older, and yes the hd is a brand new maxtor ultra16 250 gig
says my 40 gig is master
the 250 gig is slave
so i dont know what the problem is..
i could try the install cd in came with again..
 
the 136 gig thing is though, because it's an older system it only recognizes up to 136 gigs
computer specs
1.7ghz p4
620 gig ram
