Good Morning Everone!

Yesterday i went out and got myself a new laptop

the Acer 3830TG-6431:

Intel Core i5-24010m 2.3ghz (Turbo Boost up to 2.9ghz)
Nvidia GT540M
4GB DDR3 memory
500 HDD

I'm pretty happy with it and its performance in general..

but yesterday i tried gaming with it.. and it seems the games arent running as they should be with these specs..

Looking into it.. i discovered there is a throttling issue with these laptops when it comes to gaming..

i have a vague idea of what throttling does... but why would they do this?

and is it possible to stop the throttling so i can enjoy my games at a higher FPS?

It shouldn't throttle unless it is overheating. Download HWMonitor and have it open while you game, if performance slows down, alt tab and check the maximum temperatures. Also try setting the fans to max, if you can. If you're comfortable with voiding your warranty, I'd suggest changing the thermal paste as well. Laptops often have sub-par cooling solutions, and dried out paste, too much paste, or paste with a plastic protective cover left on certainly doesn't help.

Thanks for the info!

thats a bummer about the thermal paste being poorly applied..

im only really comfortable with taking apart a desktop.. i probably wouldn't take this laptop apart just yet unless i experienced bad overheating..

I tried playing bioshock 2 and after about 10 minutes into it.. it seems pretty choppy..

i searched google and ended up seeing on different forums that this laptop has a throttling "issue"

not really an issue but i guss Acer provided poor cooling so after extensive use the heat causes the throttling on performance..

im not really sure whether it affects the gpu though.

thanks again
