GOT AUDIO ONLY - NO VIDEO....again !!

This happened once before and I had to take it in to the shop to get it sorted out. I just got it out of the shop $175 later...

Months ago.....
I hired a pc tech to fix this problem - about 6 months ago. He fixed the problem but after he left I kept getting an "install raid Controler" message. I tried using the utilities disc to install it but no luck. I finally took it back to where I bought it and they fixed it so there is no Raid Controler message. I connected everything and now I can't get video AGAIN.........arghhhh!

My ps is a couple of years old......ADM 64x2 with Dual core Processor 2.41ghz
Its an SLI Platinum Board with two px7950 GT video cards (nVidia).

It's enough for me but it's so frustrating not being able to just download my Canon Camera (.avi ext) videos and watch them - when I was doing fine last week!

My operating system is Windows XP.........never up-graded to Vista.

I usually have trouble watching video with the Windows Media Player so I downloaded (a long time ago) the VLC software and it's been great........plays most any format.

I can only watch videos that are downloaded from YouTube to RealPlayer SP at this time. I was using just RealPlayer until a week or so ago and upgraded to the SP player (pop-up prompted me to do that so I did).

I thought maybe I needed to download new drivers for my nvidia cards so I went to the web site and downloaded a 7900 series (2009) driver, but it had an "i" at the end (7900i).?? My PC would not boot up properly after that because it deleted the old nVidia software and I should not have loaded the new one. I put the utilities disc in again and it sorted itself out, but I still can't get video - only audio.

HELP - Please,

KONA

I have to disagree with Euklid I wouldn't download the codec pack for 3 reasons.
1. It's not your issue.
2. They casue more problems then anything.
3. You really only need a couple codecs that XP doesn't come with most of the time anyway.

So let me get everything straight you'd had you computer fixed at least twice but still have issues. You need to be getting your money back from at least the last service and find a better place to have your PC serviced in the future. Please say you didn't go to the Geek Squad or some other national service.

VLC doesn't use the system codecs to play files. It has it's own own interal codecs. So if you had a codec issue in Windows you would still be able to play diles in vlc.
What you have is a driver issue.

At this point your best bet is to uninstall any video drivers you have on the system and install the correct ones which by what your saying you don't have. There is a link to the correct drivers for your video card(s).

I feel like I'm stating the obvious here, and since two platinum members haven't even mentioned it I feel like I'm about to make myself look quite dumb:P But since you aren't running your sound through your gpu (I assume, its usually a lot of work to do so on nvidia GPUs to begin with) wouldn't updating your sound drivers be more of an obvious choice? Not to say video card drivers couldn't do it, updating them is usually a good idea anyway and one wrong driver can make a real mess of things fast, but I'd check your sound cards drivers too.

How would I know what drivers to download? I know what I have but when I go to the nVidia download site there is a whole whack of drivers I know nothing about........so what is the one I pick??

I have two of these cards on an sli platinum board.........

look for the drivers that are supported by windows xp, then just get the highest numbered one(i think its 186.something)

@kona I included a link to the proper nvidia drivers at the end of my response. This isn't really all that hard. Finding drivers is a simple task that most computer users should be able to do. When a user is unable or unwilling to learn how to do basic tasks with a PC that means he has to pay some else alot of money to do simple things you can do. I can tell by your post your a new user without much experience so I will walk you through this.
You can do one of two things here (1) look up at my original response and you will see the link or (2) follow theses step to get there yourself.

Go to the nVidia website>click support>click Download Drivers>

Option 1 Manual select GeForce, GeForce 7 Series and Windows XP>click Search
Option 2 Automatic: click Graphics Drivers

You will get GeForce/ION Driver Release 190 that was just updated on July 21, 2009.
