I just purchased a bare bones system. I was wondering what sort of video card would be good to purchase. I do some video editing/encoding. Mainly ripping/burning dvds. I want a good gaming system and a nice system allthoghter. I can't spend tons but want a good card that will not be obsolete really soon. Thanks for any suggestions. The components follow...

Intel CPU : Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 2.66GHz, 1333FSB (Dual Core) 4096K
Intel CPU Fans : Spire Socket 775 Intel fan
Intel Motherboards : ASUS P5K PLVM G31, 1333FSB, Onboard Video,PCI Express,DDR2,Sound,1gb LAN
Sound Cards : AC 97 3D Full Duplex sound card (onboard)
Network Cards : Ethernet network adapter (onboard)
Cases : Nikao Black Neon ATX Case w/ Temperature control, front USB & iEEE
Power Supply : Okia 400W ATX Power Supply

How much can you spend? You will need a new power supply, at least 450 watts. I would get the Rosewill 500W model.

The GeForce 8800GT is one of the best mid-to-high range video cards available right now. Newegg and Clubit are out of stock, but the card should be available soon.

Don't get the 8600GTS, you would be much better off with a 7950GT.

If you want to go the DX10 route (which I recommend), I would invest in an 8800GT if you can afford it. I also wouldn't recommend getting a cheaper DX10 card then that, as you can find better performing DX9 cards for the same price.

Yep. As Omega said, if you can afford it, go w/ the 8800GT. Remember, you'll need a PSU w/ at least 450W and a +12V rail supplying 24 amps.

Thanks all. I'll look into them. I don't think I would want to go over 250 for a video card but it depends on whether its worth it for my system. I am looking into a new PSU as well.

I had another question. If I got the 8800GT and with my processor what speed ddr2 ram should I get, 1066/800/667? Am I going to see much performance increase the steps up from 667?

The Mhz of the RAM only makes a tiny difference.

667 and 800 is barely any difference i've heard, but i guess 667 and 1066 might show some noticable changes.

Don't bother with 4GB, it's overkill. 2GB of 667Mhz RAM is absolutely fine, but your mobo supports 800Mhz and it's not much more, so why not!

Also go with a well known brand, RAM is important and can go faulty quite easily so you wan't a good reliable company like:
OCZ, Corsair or Kingston.

Good luck with the build, it will be a sweet gamer :D

thats where i bought my old barebone from....was pretty good my psu went out a month later after i upgraded my gpu..(cheap).. my brother is using it now and i built my own this time around

I ran into this article and don't really understand overclocking. Which 8800GT model would you suggest? Is the GDDR3 a type of ram on the card? I have heard of DDR3 coming out I think, is it just for video cards?

I am editing my post. I just looked at the evga website and they have 4 types with different subtypes. I don't think I am advanced enough to be overclocking I am unsure what model I should be considering. It seems as thought the sub types are different based on overclocking capabilities which I don't think I need to worry about so is it a performance thing I need to consider based on the 4 main model types. I am a bit confused on that.

Well I would copy my specs and ask on another forum topic section. I think it is pretty nice. It has plenty of expansion space on the case and the upgraded motherboard I selected seems to support all I need, including a quad core CPU if I ever want to upgrade. I should have upgraded the power supply when I bought it too. I am not savvy enough to say if it was a good deal for the parts that came with it. I still need to buy a number of things... monitor, HD, disk drives, ram, ect. I got the mother board in the case plugged in appropriately but still had to mount it, and then the box for the board with manuals and things. There were quite a few screws in the mother board case and I am not sure why I had about 20 or 30 screws to mount a motherboard that only needs 3 or 4. There are some things you may want to consider that I have not such as overclocking and SLI capability, but those are things I don't know about myself. I'd make a new post and edit the one you made with a link to it and I'll help advise you if I can. It was 440 counting shipping and tax.
