Got New System...got Questions about Vista.

Well, just got myself a new computer last night with Vista Ultimate. I got an HP Pavilioon Media Center PC model m8067c-b from Sam's Club. (E6600 & Nvidia GeForce 7600 GT)

Never used Vista before and never had an LCD screen before.

My great expectations were cut short when the computer froze a couple of times. I forgot what I was doing when it froze the first time but the second time it froze, it was because I was running a DVD movie on a second monitor while watching Digital Camera movies on the main LCD. When i switched to watch another video...the computer just froze and I had to manually shut down.

I thought having a Core 2 Duo, the computer should have been able to handle what I was doing? My Vista Experience Index is 5.3 also.

The other thing is that when I get a box asking me for Permission to allow a program to run...it seems that the screen Flashes/Blinks (seems like it turns off and then on really quickly). Is that normal? I would have thought that maybe the the screen would just fade instead of blink off.

Now I get a periodic blink from the monitor...a super duper quick blink (screen turns black). almost like it's refreshing...the Refresh rate was at 59 so I moved it to it's only other option of 60mhz. It still does it. Maybe every 5 minutes or so. (I did download the latest drivers from the HP website this morning for the Monitor)

So, I hope someone can clear the air for me a little here. I'm wonder if I need to return this system (I really don't want to...it's a seasonal item and I got the last one...drove 40 miles to get it).

thanks guys/gals for any reply.

Having used vista with this same setup (Core2 + Dual LCD), I know the processor can handle it.

Were you using Aero? If you were, try using the "basic" graphics. Aero makes the GFX card take over the graphics processing, and since you have a Dual Core processor, might as well put it to use... that is if Aero was running.
Maybe the GFX card didn't like the 2 videos running at once? Still pretty weird.

You probably don't need to return it, even if certain things don't work, it's always fixable. ;)

Anyway, this is probably related to the way Vista is handling the graphics processing too. Try the thing I mentioned earlier, otherwise it might be a GFX card hardware/driver problem.

The machine is certainly powerful enough to do these tasks, but is Vista stable enough? :P

Thanks. Why didn't I think up checking to see if there were new drivers for the graphics card? LoL. I'll try that and see if it helped/solved the problems. Thanks Again!

Why did you get that vid card? You could have went way higher, that is gonna bottleneck your games.

I got a prebuilt computer...plus I don't game much.

Well, I updated the driver but something happened and it stopped sending video signal to my monitor and I had to pull the card and reinsert it. what a pain...So the new driver is installed, but it still gives me the quick flick...Well, good thing I have 6 months to return this thing if I need to.

have you tried using a different type of cable? Most modern monitors support VGA, S-Vid, and DVI together.

This probably wouldn't be relating to the freezing, but maybe the flicker.

Cool...I was in here again to ask that question again. So it's Vista that Flashes the screen when it asks for program permission, eh?

Anyhow...I got really frustrated with the performance of my machine...especially waiting almost 5 seconds for the context menu to pop up on the desktop. So...I did a factory reset. Seems that the software I got for my Monitor was what was messing everything up. HP My Display. I don't get the periodic flicker while browsing anymore. I get instant response with the right click...and pretty much the computer hasn't froze yet while watching a movie and browsing. i haven't tried the dual monitor setup yet (scared it will freeze again:rolleyes:)

Anyway, I had almost made up my mind to return/exchange this computer, but now I'm 99 percent satisfied. -1% for giving me grief the first 24 hours of use.;)
