I just used some online info to do a a dual boot XP and Vista ultimate. I thought this was going to happen but i did it anyways to be sure everything worked. I used Gparted to partition the HD, then used diskpart and shrank what i am assuming the vista partion 50%. I didnt want to, now I only have like 30 gig to vista and 45 to XP, plus like 15 for music and backup. I am fairly familiar w/ gparted. Is it able to just resize the unused space without formating or changing anything. I have both OSs working really well and i dont want to mess anything up and spend all night fixing it.

Thanks, JAson

I used gParted to resize my XP partition so that I could make way for a Linux partition. It didn't hurt Windows.

Recently I shrunk a Vista 238gb primary on one drive down to 157gb with plans for Solaris 10 which is still pending. When that was put on hold for clashing with the Vista boot loader on the first attempt to install the Vista primary was simply returned to the 238gb size seen after the drive was originally partitioned and formatted there. So far no problems.

I never found it necessary but you may want to back any unreplacable data/files as a precaution. When going to regrow the partition it will take far less time then seen when going to shrink it down. Simply click on the slider type indicator instead of pressing and holding on the up or down buttons there for the before or after space and slide it over until it reaches the end and then click apply.

Ok, having some trouble. When I go to shrink the larger partition, it frees up space but then it wont let me increase the size of the vista partition. I just like does nothing, but i can increase the xp part. back. Windows should incorporate a partition editor. I know you can do some stuff, but there should be a better one.

Vista now has the ability to shrink or grow partitions with the Disk Management tool. Whcih version of GParted are you using? The best one found for use on any MS type partitions is the "platform independent" releases not just any of the releases.

The latest is the 0.3.3.0 live for cd release that works quite well. It also loads faster then the earlier releases. If you are trying to use just any release and not a platform independent version it will fail every time since those are UNIX only type partitions. With a good burn of the 35mb 0.3.3.0 release you should have no problem shrinking the Vista primary. http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=115843&package_id=173828

I also like the version that comes with FreeSpire, it's great as far as handling MS goes.

With both Home and Pro versions of XP along with Vista Home Premium spread across three of the four hard drives installed I wouldn't be caught without a good working copy of the 0.3.3.0 version. That immediately went to work when shrinking the Vista single primary on the second drive here.

The newer ones since that release have a new "start x" feature now seen that takes a lttle getting used to like mounting a folder? That's a little hard on a cd-r to get done. That is a new automatic display configuration tool now seen in the newer releases that are seen as I386 under the "architecture" heading.

thanks, got it to work. I was using the gparted off the ubuntu live cd that didnt work, but the solo program worked.

The version of GParted on the ubuntu disk is not "platform independent" as you found out there. This is one reason why I keep emphasizing the 0.3.3.0 version for those especially not familiar with Linux to begin with. Having a few copies around of the lve cd version there never hurts. Now you have something to work with for MS anyways. :D
