GPU Memory and compatibility

Hi everyone,

So I'm wondering, does the gpu memory type have to match the type of RAM I have. For example the XFX PV-T86M-YNF2 GeForce 8400 GS 512MB 64-bit DDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready Video Card has ddr3 and I have ddr2 ram. Would this be compatible?

Athlon 64 x2 3800+
NODUSm3
1Gb x2 512Mb x2 RAM
 
no they don't have to be compatible. The memory on the graphics card is only used by the graphics card, and has no affect on the system in any way except through the PCI/PCIe/AGP lane it is installed in. You can use a DDR5 graphics card all the way back on PC133 and all the way up on DDR4 and above.
