GPU Upgrade?

I'm not as happy as I thought I'd be with my two 8800GTs, and since I was experiencing problems with them a few months ago, I'm not sure I want to rely on them.. I've been looking at the GTX 280s and was wondering if one of them would be better than my current SLI setup, then after awhile, adding a second one. I also want to semi future proof my PC for awhile because I may want to if I want to continue playing up and coming games.

Let me know.

And yes, I think Mep was selling a 280, but that totally skipped my mind, lol.

Thanks.

I was getting black screens after the BIOS and stuff, I also did something when I was putting the aftermarket coolers on or something, I don't know.

But don't I have an NVIDIA board? I don't know if I'd want an ATI card..

Wouldn't two 280s be future proof for awhile?

Yeah man, two 280's will last you 2-3 years probably. (Don't quote me on it).

Hm, when are they expected to come out? And what would the pricing be?

If it's in a few months, and reasonably priced, that's fine.

Thanks.

They're announcing the GeForce GTX 295 on he 8th January, 2009, - first day of CES 2009 exhibition, i assume they'll talk about prices then, during the exhibition. :)

As for the 265GTX i dont know man.

Do we know how much better the 295s are going to be? If two 280s will last me a few years with playing up and coming games on max, then I'd be fine.

Thanks.

you would have quad sli with the 295, if you have the cash, wait for the gtx 285, and right now, sli with 280's would cost around 600 bucks from newegg

No way 2 x GTX280 would last 2-3 years. (based on Flar0n's post)

The HD3870 was the top card for ATI for around $250 when it came out. In one year, its price has been greatly nerfed to around $75, now that's insane. Ii has been crushed by lots of new cards.

Judging from that, 2 years from now, the GTX280 will be outdated and will not give you the performance you want even though it will most likely let you play whatever games are out.

[Opinion]In other words, if you want "future-proofing", it's gonna be a bit too hard to find. There's no such thing as "future-proofing" Best thing you can do is find the BEST deal you can find for one of the top cards at the moment and game the hell out of them. 1-2 years later when they are outdated, rinse and repeat.[/Opinion]

Ok now on topic. I suggest you buy a GTX280 since the price has dropped from when they came out, it would certainly perform better than 2 x 8800GT in SLi and will consume less power I think...

Done. LOL

Alright, I'll wait to see the 295s, are they being released on the 8th, or are they just talking about them?

And if I went with the 280s, I'd buy one then get the other one down the road.

But if the 295s come out relatively soon, and it's 2 cards in 1, right? I'd get one then another one down the road.

I also want to get faster ram, but that's not an issue right now.

Thanks.

Hey I said Don't quote me on that! :P

But if you really wanted futureproofing you should get one of those X58 motherboards, and two HD 4870 X2's. That would be one mighty system.

I haven't used Zotac, or BFG, but doesn't BFG have a good return policy?

Or does Zotac as well?

I'll wait for the 295s that come out on the 8th? And if they're nice, I'll buy one.

Well, I'll buy one 295 right off the bat, then if I need to upgrade, I'll get a second card and probably a 1k watt PSU, and in between that, I'll get a bigger monitor.

Just waiting on a price for the 295s.

What about a 4870X2?
