Graduation Laptop

My mom told me to go ahead and start looking for a laptop for graduation. She is willing to pay about $800-850 or somewhere in that area. Im looking into some dell products right now but dont know exactly what i should be looking for in a laptop. Are their any specific brands you would recommend for me to get? Also what processors, how much ram, ect....should I look for?

what do you intend on doing with the laptop? basic things, gaming.. what?

Well, not Dell, that is what I would say. The broken Dells in this world far outnumber the properly working ones :P

But anyway, what are you doing with it? For $800, you can't get a great system, but it will be plenty fast for most things. But it all depends on what you will be doing.

Surfing the web (need good speed for that). Not really into gaming much though. I dont know who i will be hangin out w/ in college but their is a good chance i will get into gaming eventually. But mostly just working on the internet, typing papers, downloading music and programs and probably playing a little counterstrike.

edit: What brands would you recommend besides dell if that would be a bad choice.

im talking about the kind of stuff thats in your sig....i have no idea what that means.

You mean in my sig? Don't worry about what that means.

Just go here or to a similar site and customize a laptop to how you want it. If you don't know what something means, there is a help section there, or you can ask us.

have you actually owned a dell laptop or are you hopping on the dell sucks bandwagon?
their desktops can be troublesome and made crappily and i would agree causes many problems but their laptops are nearly identical in performance and durability as hp, toshiba, emachines, vaio, gateway, etc. keep in mind these companies do not actually build their own parts.

Yes I have owned a Dell laptop and have serviced some desktops. All OEM manufacturers suck. Especially the ones that outsource their customer support to india or china or uzbekistan

I think he meant non-mainstream laptops, but I would have to disagree. Dell (along with all mainstreams) don't even manufacture their own laptops. They order their stuff from the likes of Compal and Quanta. Not saying these manufacturers suck or anything, but they degrade quality for Dells standards and pricing. I dont blame Dell for it, it's all about selling affordable machines, even if it's crap quality to some.

I liked Asus notebooks way before I became a reseller. You can call them an OEM manufacturer too, or ODM (Original Design Manufacturer). Aside from being the #1 motherboard maker in the world, some people don't know that Asus has been a long time ODM maker of laptops for the likes of Sony and Apple for quite some time now. So if you stroll around a Best Buy or Circuit City, you can compare one of the Sony's with a Dell or Compaq, you'll see the difference in build quality and screen quality. Asus now have an extensive line of notebooks of their own. So you'll have to imagine the effort they'd be putting into their own products. With use of carbon fiber and brushed aluminum, their chassis are much better than anything on the market, in my opinion. On a side note, did you know that Asus was the manufacturer of the PS2?
