Graphics card memory

This is probally a really stupid question, but the memory thats comes with graphics cards e.g. 768mb for the 8800GTX which im looking at, is the same as the RAM of the computer.

Like, if i have 2GB of RAM and a 768MB graphics card does that mean i'll actually have 2768MB of RAM (I think a GB is a 1000MB, no completly sure though )

I just assumed that the 768MB form the graphics card would only concentrate on gaming whilst the 2GB of RAM would do other stuff like run Vista or the Internet and stuff.

This is probally really stupid, just i heard that 2GB should be the minimum for running vista and i though that if im running Vista and a demanding game my comp would fail because there isint enough RAM.

Also is 2GB of computer RAM enough for a Vista OS and for playing games on as well?

No, VRAM and system RAM are completely independent.

2GB should be plenty for most any game. I run 2GB on my XP machine without a swap file and almost never have any problems(well, never with games :P)

No, seperate entities you will need 1.5 to 2 gb of system RAM to run games at there intended levels or at least thats my experience. Also 1 gb of ram equals 1,024mb not (1,000).

The "future" system in your sig if going to be a freakin beast and you will have Zero issues with pretty mcuh whatever you throw at it.
