hi everyone
forgive me if i dont really know what im talking about - this is my first post and to be honest i think im going to be a bit vague about the problem! ill try my best tho...
when the graphics card is connected to the computer we dont get a monitor display, when its removed we do as the VGU grapics i think it is kick in. we've had both the graphics card and mother board tested and apparently theyre fine. i think its an ATI graphics card we have. Tried downloading other drivers etc. Unsure what else to try apart from take it to a computer shop but to be honest would rather not as its an expense I dont need at the moment!! any suggestions or advice would be appreciated!!

It sounds like the default setting in the system bios was never changed from PCI for a pci slot card default to the AGP or PCI-Express setting. Windows itself has basic vga drivers for something to be seen when starting the system through the boot process and into normal operation. You may be seeing either a bad monitor or connection problem. You could try another monitor to see that is the problem.

thanks for the help. well me bf tried to change the bios and didnt help. also when we took the graphics card along to the cop shop the graphics card worked fine in another machine and monitor. the monitor i have works fine its only when the graphics card is interested there seems to be a problem...just doesnt make sense :(

Is there a power plug on your video card? If so, did you plug power into it? And don't worry, that setting in the BIOS makes no difference at all. It isn't there for that purpose. The only thing it does is tell the computer which device to try and initialize first. Even if you never touch it the AGP adapter will always work.

Have you tried another VGA card in that slot?

Did you make sure that the slot supplies enough voltage? There are 3.3V and 1.5V AGP slots (and now 0.8V slots). If you do not supply the right voltage the card will not function obviously.

Also, I have seen VGAs conflict with onboard VGAs. It is my hunch that this is what is happening in your system, but without knowing any specifics I can't say for sure. That's why I ask you if you tried a different VGA.

What make and model board is that? By referring to the specifications that will tell whether or not you have onboard video. By default that is often enabled which would switch outgoing video signal to the vga out on the board. When you power up do you see anything onscreen? Your mention of going into the bios suggests some signal output is seen.
