my nvidea 8400 broke a month ago so i bought a second hand one off ebay. that didnt work, it just kept beeping for 3 seconds and no picture would be displayed.
thinking it was the graphics card i bought a brand new 8400gs but im still getting the problem. the same happens, it beeps for 3 seconds then nothing happens, the computer fans still run but no picture.

anyone know the problem?

also with my first graphics card which originally broke i get a picture, but it has lines going down the screen and i cant run games.
 
So your computer still works with your original card, but not the 2 newer ones?

I would put the original card back in, uninstall the nVidia drivers, then replace the card with the brand new one and see what happens.

it sort of works. i get a picture but it doesnt support directX and i get lines and colours down the screen.

il try doing what you said.
 
i just installed the drivers but im still getting the same problem.
what i cant figure out is why my original card is still partly working, but the rest dont work at all.
forgot to mention the original card seems to be different than the other two. its still a 8400, but it must be a earlier make.
 
Well, what is the make/model of your computer? What OS? On the original card, did you have lines on the screen during boot-up? Like, when the motherboard manufacturer's logo was up?

If so, you ought to try cleaning your PCI-e slot out (using canned air or a vacuum)

If not, it definitely sounds like a driver issue. Please answer the above questions, and also where you downloaded the driver you are using from, so that we may be sure you are using the correct driver for your make and model.
 
If nothing at all is being displayed on POST then it definitely is not a driver problem. Since the old one still partially work, that pretty much rules out any other sort of hardware failure. You might consider the possibility that you got two bad video cards in a row. Another remote possibility is that the new cards use more power than the old one, and your PSU isn't able to handle it.

maybe its the PSU, i did have it replaced at one point and im not sure what they replaced it with.

im taking it to the repair shop i got the new graphics card from (and replaced the PSU), hopefully they can figure it out.
