Graphics memory?

I dont know if this is the right place for this, but anyways....... I just installed Fear on my laptop, and i have been playing it on high settings for a while. Then one day vista does its Blue screen of death and blames my graphics card for the problem, and suggested i update my graphics card drivers, so i updated some drivers for the card. Now i have another slight, but annoying problem. I can play fear great on high settings for a while, then all of a sudden it laggs, a consistent steady lagg. I have to turn off the game, and turn it back on, then it works great for another 30 min or so. I dont remember this problem when i had the old driver for my card, but i could be wrong.

if it makes a difference, i installed like 3 drivers at once, i just told them to restart later. they all "fixed" different problems, so i installed them all. It made me restart my computer 3 times, once for every driver.

I just noticed another problem, my computer will not go to sleep, nothing i tried will make it sleep.

HP DV9500t
core 2 duo t7700 2.4Ghz
Vista Home Premium 32bit
2 gigs RAM
2 5400rpm 160GB HDD's
Nvinia G-Force 8600mgs (i think 256mb)

Any help on either problem would be greatly appreciated

This sounds like an overheating issue. The most obvious reason is because you said it plays fine for a while, then it starts to lag and it need to be shutdown. When a video card starts to become too hot, it will throttle down the clock and memory speeds to help lower the temps, which will cause the game to all of a sudden run much worse.

You could try:

1) Lapping the CPU

2) Cleaning out the dust

3) Re-apply thermal paste

4) Lower the settings

5) Get a fan on the bottom.

ok, that makes sense, i guess it would be better than a major overheat and something like "the mysterious blue smoke" or something. I have some questions about oscars post.

what is "lapping the cpu"

Re applying thermal paste-- i have a laptop, i believe taking it apart (except for hard drives and things that are designed for easy access) will void my warranty. My graphics card is defiantly not easily accessible

Get a fan on the bottom-- i have one fan in my laptop, i dont think i can add any more. I also use a cooling stand, the Targus Mobile X.

I think this problem probaly arised now because i watched a few hours of recorded tv, then decided to play fear when i was done with that. so it was already hot and playing fear just made it hotter. and my computer wouldn't sleep, even though the screen would turn off. I fixed this sleeping problem though, i found a post somewhere with my answer, under the battery settings, all battery mode settings default to "when media sharing is enabled, computer may not sleep". changing that fixed that problem =)

thank you so much for the quick and probably correct answers

You can't lap it because there is no heatspreader on the GPU/CPU, it's just the core itself. I also wouldn't recommend it because it can be dangerous if not done correctly.

I also wouldn't advise opening up the laptop, as it would void the warranty and may cause more issues then it solves.

I believe what he meant about a fan on the bottom is an external cooling pad. What I would try first is manually setting the fan speed to 100%, and see if that helps. To do that I would download RivaTuner, once you do that then i'll tell you further on how to do it.

ok, ill install it, do u have an x-fire or IM account? or would u rather just use this forum to help?

I dont know if i made this clear or not, but when i said i turned the game off then back on and it worked for another 30 min, i literally turned it off, waited for 10 seconds, and turned it back on. Is this still an overheating issue?

Also, i can play Warrock on high settings fine, no problems at all. Just Fear seems to have this problem.
Note: Fear is meant for winxp, im running it on vista home premium

bump

anybody have suggestions?? I think its kind of weird that all i have to do is close the game, wait 2 seconds, then play it again. some friends at school told me this
could be a memory leak?

My problem still remains that fear on high settings will last 15 - 30 minutes then lagg. a simple close of the game and restart after 5 seconds lets it go for another 15 minutes or so.

could this be something else besides graphics card?

i am getting a cooling fan for x-mas

help is greatly appreciated
