Graphics Settings. Driver level or in game?

Recently I have become interested in the fact that some people seem to set the graphics settings for a particular application with in the Nvidia control panel. (Or ati). I have always made changes via the settings page in a game. Are there any advantages to doing this at driver level, or does it make no difference at all.

I usually adjust the ones in the game and the ones that the game does not let me adjust I adjust in catalyst control center, that is ATI's software interface thingy. I am uncertain of any particular advantage, although I normally notice a difference in performance by adjusting both, meaning I lose it, take for instance I put ASF on 16x in game and than 8x in CCC and I noticed some lag, this was unknown so I simply put the one in CCC back to 'use application setting.'

SO I guess what I would recommend is, adjust all for best performance and appearance to your liking.
