alright i've got my agp card installed... except when i turn on the computer, neither card works. when i plug in the new video card, it tries to run that one. i need the on-board one to install the agp card though. the card's installed right, so i tried going into setup upon starting the computer. from their i go to default video card, the choices are "pci" and "agp/on-board". crap. i'm trying to separate the agp and the on-board, but theyre in the same choice.

in the instruction booklet it said plug the monitor into the new card. only problem is, when the new card is in, neither card will work. help please!!

EDIT: the card isn't "installed", it's just in the slot

your system specs would be very helpful here. its difficult to tell exactly whats going on with out more information i'm afraid

You shouldn't need it. Just plug the monitor into the new card.

What motherboard do you have?

Edit: I hate it when someone beats me to a post :P

uhh, the card (external AGP) is a geforce fx5200 128mb.

my motherboard:
- Motherboard Manufacturer: ASUSTek Computer INC.
- Motherboard Model: Salmon

on board card:

- DirectX Version: DirectX 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904)
Device:
- Name: SiS 760
- Manufacturer: SiS
- Chip Type: SiS 760 Rev 00
- Approx. Total Memory: 64.0 MB

it's got windows xp with sp2 and it's a compaq sr1417cl

if you need more info lemme know... (and i really don't know why NEITHER works when i put the vid card in..)

wth? how many video cards do you have in one comptuer?! you're only suppose to have one in your case seeing it isn't sli or cf.

try setting it so that no memory is dedicated to the onboard card and then put your new card in the system. if that doesn't work try having a look in the motherboard manual for something about disabling the onboard video, there may be a jumper on the board that allows this

and yeah, how would i direct the memory to the on-board or disable the on-board all-together?

One that he has is a built in one to the motherboard, and now hes trying to install a new agp.

ahhh you have the asus K8S-LA :)
cant find anything on it :(
is there a chipset menu in the bios? if so, the graphics adapter priority sub-menu might hold what you need.. or you could have a dead agp slot

there should be something in the advanced chipset options.

most modern boards figure out that there's a new card in the agp slot and it automatically disables the onboard one.
however, ones that dont do this will have an option to disable the onboard one

Ok, i went on a bit of a mission to see what i could find and found a link for this manual http://www.ctechinfo.org/manuals/salmon_manual.pdf

the manual is slightly ambiguous though, as it mentions a PCI express slot being part of the system but it shows a 1.5V agp slot and also shows the installation procedure for the card. i would say that you definately have the agp version but to make sure the slot should be a brown colour if it is an agp slot.

the only thing i have to mention however is that the manual shows none of the bios features which makes it a little more difficult.

If you look here (http://www.ctechinfo.org/manuals/salmon_manual.pdf) under the agp text it says the agp slot is shared with pci slot one (or at least i think it says that) :P ...if you have anything in pci slot 1 try moving it to a different slot. If this is useless at least everyone has a copy of that manual now :P

EDIT: GOD DAMNIT ITS HAPPEND AGAIN!!! :(

well yeah the slot is brown, and it's slightly askew to the 3 grey (im assuming PCI) slots. yeah, and i'm new to computers so i don't understand half of what you guys said sorry :p:
