Gta IV settings use 996 of 1024 mb video memory...

This is the first game that has showed me how much video memory it is using. I have the radeon vapor x 5770 and it runs GTA IV flawlessly on almost all very high settings. My question is...Is it possible to draw extra memory for my video card from my ram or is this a dumb question? I have plenty if it is possible. Thanks

By the way, if anybody has played GTA IV on the 360 or Ps3, and then played it on the pc, WOW!! what a difference in graphics!! I was never into pc games really until I got a decent card!
 
Using more video memory than you have is not a good idea, because it will overflow the memory and use system memory, which is slower.

You have a quadcore, which is needed for GTA IV. what resolution do you play at?
 
Okay, at that resolution keep the view distance and detail around 30 and 65, respectively. keep traffic density at 50 or so.
