GTX 460 1GB SLI v. 5870 Crossfire

you should make the title GTX 460 1GB SLI v. 5870 Crossfire. i thought it meant a single 460 was equal to 2 5870's and i was like woah, no way... just sayin

Yeah, meant to have SLI in the title, fixed that.

As for scaling, its amazing, granted these are real world tests and not benchmarks, but most people buying 460's are looking for gaming performance vs benching anyhow.

no need in saying granted there. real world does matter a lot more than benchmarks. if the roles were reversed THEN you'd need to say granted :P

big mistake to drop tri/quad sli though.

Nah, what i'm saying is these are really good real world cards, but if your a bencher then they arent the best cards, although they do bench and OC pretty well:P Cause benching wise the 5870 still hits quite hard.

oh i was agreeing with you i just thought the "granted" part wasn't necessary since it wasn't opposed to the main point of the argument at all. they matter more than benchmarks.

they used the GF104 chip for the 460. is nvidia planning on re-releasing the 470/480 with this chip anytime soon? seems the cards would really benefit what with the lower power consumption, heat, etc.

Supposedly, we are going to see a 470 refresh called the 475 with a fully enabled GF104 chip(384 shaders). 480 is going to stay on GF100, because GF104 has far less available shaders, ROPs, and texture units than a GF100 chip. This is all speculation of course.

i'm assuming they're probably giving the option of four-way 475 sli, right? that would be pretty interesting to see (performance in all aspects vs. the 470).

No idea, although i would doubt it, as other speculation points toward a dual GPU GF104 card as well(in addition to a "GTX 475", and the fact that the 470 doesnt allow the option of four way SLI. (Technically, Quad SLI is two dual GPU cards, Four way SLI is four discreet cards).

what was the point of dropping the support again? wasn't it to keep the sales for the upper cards up?

duly noted ;)

Dropping support of what, tri sli on the 460's? Most people speculate that tri support was dropped in order to keep sales of upper cards up, but also that "Most people purchasing a GTX 460 won't want to Tri-SLI anyhow". Bear in mind that four way SLI is a brand new thing to nVidia with the GTX 480's, the only previous four way SLI before hand was the GTX 285 Classified from EVGA, and that was an EVGA exclusive, and drivers in fact saw that as two 295's due to some clever trickery on the cards bioses.

yeah i meant on the 460s. hmm, well that seems both smart and stupid. yeah keep the sales up but i'd think quite a few people would tri-fire the 460 to be able to get a more affordable setup with the same performance as more expensive ones...

so do you think nvidia was sort of testing the waters with the four-way sli with the 480s? think it will eventually become an option on more cards like ati has?

I think the reason they kept four-way to the 480's was to ensure that if people want the best of the best, they are going to pay a premium for it.
