GTX vs GT

I have 2 friends who stably OCed their 8800GT to 700/1750/1800.

Why then, can I not stably OC my 8800GTX XXX to anywhere near those amounts?

My memory clock is way bigger than theirs stock, and I got it a little higher - but I am having stability issues at 660/1650 for the core and shader - what is up with that?

Am I doing something wrong, or is the GT just that much better at OCing?

Thanks

Two questions...well, maybe three...

...what are your temperatures at stock and your maximum achieved OC (the highest you can get it that a game will run fine with)?

...what's your fan speed? Yeah, I know this is probly an uber-noob question, but I ask it anyway. I manually set the fan speed on my stock VGA cooler, I'd assume lots of people do the same.

...and the iffy question...what's airflow in the case look like? If the airflow sucks around the VGA card, you could get a condition car guys call "heat soak". Simply put, the non-moving air around the card heats up since it's not being replaced with fresh, cool air. This warm air allows the card to heat up even more.

To directly answer your question, yeah, the GT is a lot better at OC'ing, or so I've heard. The new core is cooler and less power-hungry. The stock cooler is better. And so on.

Lastly, there's a little variation between cards. Your particular GTX might just not be as OC-friendly. But before you get all bent out of shape, ask yourself if you're really going to notice all that much of a performance difference. If you're a benchmarking junkie, fine, then worry about it. But if all you want to do is play games, like most of us, just sit back and enjoy it until it's time to buy something better.

Well with the current stable OC, temps range from about 55 - 70 (absolute max).

I have the fan speed set at 100%, if that is the unit you are interested in haha.

Air flow is fine - Antec 900 with other 2 non-stock fan slots filled and 2 fans on a Thermalright Ultra 120e. Haggard cable mess in the case, but plenty of air flow when all the fans are on high.

I'm not really much of a benchmark junkie, though I would like to push my system past 15000 - I've seen people with worse systems then mine do it haha. I'm only on 14944 right now.

But I understand what you are saying about the chips and all, so I might just leave it as is - I guess I am happy with how it has been running, even before I attempted any OCing.

Thanks
