Half Life 2 on Ebay?

now that i will finally have a system capable of running it, id like to get half life 2, i noticed on ebay that most of the auctions are for the cd-key itself instead of the game itself, my question is, can i buy a cd-key and then acquire a copy of the game elsewhere and will it work like that? such as if i buy a cd-key, and then buy a used copy of the game elsewhere?

well then why isnt ebay doing something about it? if you search for half life 2 thats pretty much all you will find is cd-keys for sale.

it is a little iffy i guess, but its not like its free by any means...so i dont know, im pretty much now just trying to find a new copy for sale...but those are somewhat pricey

I'm pretty sure that's illegal

Heres what they do on eBay:

They sell you the unregistered cdkey that came from the orignial box, then you go to www.steampowered.com and download the Steam application, and you register your cd-key, and it knows that it was for HL2, and it allows you to download the game via steam. I believe they do this so they dont have to ship it out, and save you money, and its perfectly LEGAL! otherwise eBay would take it off.

yeah thats exactly what theyre offering, and i would gladly do that, the only problem is that i am on dial-up, so download HL2 isnt happening anytime today, im tight with the network admin of the school i go to or i guess i should say the school i used to go to(graduated this year) and he would gladly let me use the schools high speed connection to download it, but its like 5 cds isnt it? and im sure theyre all full, and i dont have that kinda time to be at school...but i did find some new, unused copys of HL2 for right around 30 bucks, so ill see what i can swing as soon as the money gets into my paypal account

woot just bought a brand new copy for 23 bucks including shipping! thats a deal i dont care who you are....

Its not like a website where you download it. I dont know if your school would let you do it, but you have to insteall the Steam application, and then download it via that, and it downloads a bunch of files to that comp, so you would have to make sure you get every file. If i were you, i would get it on www.newegg.com (where i got mine), there new and it only costs $30 i belive. And just to note, this is how big each game is:

Half Life 2 - 838MB
Counter Strike Source - 1173MB
Half Life 2 Deathmatch - 140MB

And what sucks is taht Steam doesnt download at the fastest speed, it downloads very slowly, i belive it does this so it can download updates and stuff while you paly games, without affecting it. I hope this helped.

i dont know why i didnt look on newegg first,it would be about 35 before all was said and done, but i could definetely deal with that...but i already committed to pay for the one off ebay so theres not much i can do...dummy me only transferred 30 dollars from my bank account to paypal, so thats all i had to spend, but supposedly this will work fine, and be here relatively soon....if it doesnt work im gonna be pissed....

You probably should have mentioned that to him before, but it is more expensive then newegg and ebay, and i think he wanted it around $30. Im surprised i didnt think if that tho, lol

go to newegg.com and possibly amazon.com, but i know newegg has it for about 35 including shipping

the ebay user i bought mine from had several copies available, he/she may not have sold them all yet if you are interested in that
