Half-Life 2

I just purchased Half-Life 2 and comes with 5 discs. I didn't make it past the first one and this message came up. ERROR 1305. Error reading from file: C:\Program Files\Valve\SteamApps\base sorce shared materials.gcf. Verify that the file exists and that you can access it. I asume that you have to be online to install it. As I installed it I disabled Norton Antivirus 2006, screen saver and destop theme. Could anyone tell me what the problem is?

Why not just download steam (www.steampowered.com), make an account, and enter the CD Key found on your game box, then you can download it online.

I found an activation key or I think on the sleeve of cd 1 but isn't working is that another one on the box and if so where

Either the CD-Key is on one of the CD's or on the back of the manual.

isn't that the error message you get when you dont have steam installed? Make sure that steam is installed properly and see if you still get it when you try installing HL2 again
And yes you do need to be online for it to install

i had a problem with the dvd version when installin, i found it was because i didn't select CS:S aswell as HL2, once i selected them both it installed fine.

I've tried everything and think that the CD is bad. Going to try and get my money back. Thanks for the advice
