Hi,

I have a P-4 system 1.7 Ghz, which is having 80GB hard disk then i got 250 GB hard disk, infact 250 GB hard disk is detected in BIOS but windows doesnt shows it up.

80 GB hard disk details:
Model ST380021ABarrracudda ATA IV

250 GB hard disk details:
WD2500Jb

what can be the problem?

Please reply soon.

Thanks,
Prasad

Make sure yuo connected the jumpers right. Right click the 80GB and click properties. Go to Hardware. See if you can see the HDD there

it is detecting 80Gb and not 250 GB, is there anything that motherboard has some limit to support so much hard disk?

it shouldn't... if the drive was just bought as an oem... it might need to be formatted or else the jumpers could not be set up properly... are they IDE drives I assume?

is an ATA drive rgt? similar to 80 Gb Model ST380021ABarrracudda ATA IV

as i took that old hard disk to the shop to guy a new one...

yes now i am trying to connect one cdrom and that new hard disk, without any OS on it, so i put a bootable XP CD in cdrom, and make that hard disk as master, then it says as no OS detected

is it necessary to put a jumper setting as a master for CDROM, i tried with and without jumper both not working, i want to connect CDROM and a new blank hard disk,

so the new hard disk would be Master and do CDROM also has to a master/slave?

go to bios (hold del probably when it boots) and check your boot priority... set it up so the first one is CD-ROM you could even disable the rest. Then when it starts it will say press any key to boot from cd... do it. XP installer should start up.

What OS are you running? Also, some older motherboards will not support anything larger than 80 gigs. So look up your motherboard specs and make sure it will work with it. There might be a bio's upgrade in your future.

On the WD webpage they give alternate jumper settings, try them and see if your drive shows up, If it does then you will need either a bio's update or a new motherboard.

its gotta be pretty old... I have a dell from '99 or '00 that had like a 40gig drive and I put a maxtor 160 in it and it worked fine... so unless its an antique...

I edited my last post, take a look at it again. My wifes computer was a gateway, I tried putting a 80 gig in it and it would not see it. Ended up building her a new system. Her's was from 1999.
