Hi there,
I have a dell 9200 desktop, it has two 320gb hard drives, one of which is faulty, is it possible to replace the faulty one with a 500gb. So then i will have 320gb and a 500gb, or does both drives have to be the same.
Sorry for such a novice question, but im not very technical. cheers:)

As long as you aren't running in raid then any size hard drive will work for a second drive. Some manufacturers like giving you 2 drives and raid them together to give you more drive space instead of giving you just one big drive. Not sure how yours is set up. Did you have one or 2 hard drives show up in "my computer"?

re how many drives

Hi there its showing up as two drives. But i now see it says raid next to both of them. this doesnt mean i have to replace both does it, it does only show a fault in port drive 1. Many thanks for your help.

Do you have different files on each drive? If its showing up as 2 drives then you are not running raid. In raid both drives will only appear as 1 drive.

re drives

In my computer its shows Hard Drives (2) c drive (os system) = 586 gb and then d drive (recovery) = 9.99gb

Ok, then yes you are running raid. The bad thing is that you will have to reinstall windows from scratch as you are running raid 0. Or you can always buy a bigger drive and use the good one you have now for windows and the new one just for your data. You would have to disable raid though.
