Hey guys,
My desktop has been acting pretty funny for a while. Extremely slow start up, and just running slow for about 15 minutes for it to get back to normal then it will go pretty fast. This is a pretty old computer, so its not blazing fast like the new ones today but it goes just about back to its normal speed after running for a little while. Well, about 2 weeks ago, I turned it on, and it wouldn't finish booting, so I restarted it again and it came up with a quick flash of BSOD and restarted and cycled that. I had just installed an old CD drive from another computer, so I thought maybe that was causing the problem, and so I unplugged that, but the problem was still there. That led me to believe it was my hard drive.
Since I didn't really have another hard drive laying around, but I had an empty external one, I took apart the external drive and put it in as my computer as the primary drive and loaded windows onto it thinking I would be able to use my old drive as a slave and pull the files and stuff I wanted off of it, format it and it would be good to go. The new hard drive worked great, and everything was good. Now that I had torn apart my external, I had a SATA to USB converter. I thought getting my old stuff would be as simple as plugging the old hard drive into the USB and copy and pasting. However, as soon as I plugged the hard drive in via USB, the computer recognized there was a drive plugged in and crashed and went into the BSOD cycle again.
So I thought of my second option which was plugged the drive into the secondary SATA connector on the motherboard, and made sure the right HD was selected as primary in the BIOS, and even when I did that the BSOD cycle happened.
So my question is...Is this hard drive toast? Is there any way to get my files? Thanks for helping.
