Hard Drive crashing.... and crashing...

Well I've been having some trouble with my harddrive lately, it's pretty big, 120GB, about 100GB used, so you can imagine there's plenty of stuff there I'd like to not lose. That is not my main hard drive though, it's just a slave drive. It has been crashing lately, suddenly started dissapearing from My Computer, having me go back and forth to Hardware management to do a hardware detection every time I want to use it. As of late it has been getting worse, it just crashes every time I want to open up a file from that drive.

What I assume is that since it used to be just laying around inside the computer box, it might have gotten damaged. I have gotten a hard drive support now and put it in place as for it to not be touching anything else and it even has three fans for it in the front but it still does not solve it. Could it have gotten damaged because it was laying around inside the computer case? Is there a way to fix this problem?

you got a spec of the HDD, MAKE, AGE, etc...
Is quite possible that its on its way out ! or bad connection with the cables ?

it's a Western Digital, got it about a year and a half ago, maybe a little more, got it at Fry's, very reputable place, I believe it's the same brand as my OS hard drive, which has been going for about 4 years now. I don't think it's a bad cable connection since I changed the cables and switched power cables.

no it almost has to be a bad drive or a bad cable, I had the same problem and it was my sata cable, I replaced it and haven't had a problem since. And just cause a drive is only a year and a half old doesn't mean it can't start going bad already. Leaving it on the bottom of the case wasn't a good idea, but if that broke it then actually mounting it now isn't going to fix what you already broke

It does sound like a loose or damaged cable.

However, always assume the worst and prepare now. I would find a way to back all the data up before it goes kaput completely.

Go to the drive manufacturer's site and download diagnostic utilities for that particular model and see if they find anything. Have the serial number handy, and if it fails, see if it is still covered under warranty.
