Hard Drive Crunching Noise When Under Load

Wow way to completely throw this thread off course guys. He's asking why harddrive makes noise when doing heavy transfers.

My harddrive makes that noise too, but I couldn't hear it until I switched to my new case where everything is super quiet.

Which suggests wear + tear taking it's toll most likely on the drive there. I move 13gb video files around between drives and don't hear a peep! I backup data off of a drive by copy and pasting a good number of folders and never hear hardly anything but the occasional speedup of most likely the fan in supply since more power is called for then.

I don't believe it's due to wear and tear. My brand new 150GB raptor makes that noise. I can hear it if I put my ear close to my case. Older hard drives always made that noise. Just latest hard drives have been made much more quiet with newer technologies.

Were just curious on what creates the noise from the drive head which is normal for hard drives. All I know is that it's the rapid movements from the drive head causing it but how it is making that noise is what I don't know.

Someone took the effort to write: How To Troubleshoot a Noisy Hard Drive
Difficulty: Average
Time Required: Anywhere from 15 minutes to a few hours depending on the cause of the hard drive noise http://pcsupport.about.com/od/nonworkingcomponent/ht/hdnoisetb.htm

The article provides a second page that lists the diagnostic tools provided by each drive manufacturer which would be recommneded here. WD drives already have their LifeGuard tools. Seagate has their own SeaTools. Likewise Maxtor, Hitachi, and others have their own as well. Windows has it's own chkdsk included but that has it's limits.

"Noises you should not expect to hear are any type of repetitive clicking, very noticeable humming or any type of hard thump. If any of these noises are experienced it is recommend that the hard disk drive be looked at or replaced as it may be going bad." http://www.databe.com/noise.html

That won't suffice as far as what you should be hearing. So a quick trip to http://youtube.com/watch?v=9eMWG3fwiEU&mode=related&search= shows a drive in operation with the cover off. Think I should add that to my sig too? :P

In that video, hear how the head makes all that noise when it is moving? What he wants to know is how it creates that noise.

In that video it counds like a little clicking is heard along with the gearing snapping the arm back and forth. You can easily tell the sound of the platters there by the whirring sound as the spindle is spinning the disks. There however the casing has been opened up where each sound is heard more clearly.

Just so you guys know. It's not a faulty hard disk. It's working perfectly fine without any issues. All I mean't to ask was why HDD's make the loud humming noise they sometimes do when under a heavy work load.

Think back to the days of the old P2's. When you used to boot up your AV control centre or your browser or something. Remember your HDD light going crazy and your HDD fire up and start making a loud hum / crunch noise while loading? That's all I was curious about. What makes it make that noise :p.

The only time I found myself with a somewhat noisey hard drive was when running an old IBM 386 desktop model with a 50mb drive there. Now that's going back quite a few years at this point.
