Lately my HD has taken to crying when i decide to game! just now, in the oblivion menu, i was hearing this whine again when i noticed that if i change the menu option that my mouse was on, the pitch of the whine would change!

what on earth causes this? please dont tell me my drive is going dead!

Is it actually the drive or the large fan seen on the cpu cooler? When placing a good load on the cpu a noisey fan's whine while speeding may be what you are hearing unless you have your ear right up against the case to listen. A noisey drive on the other hand generally spells trouble if you start seeing problems.

well im thinking it can't be the processor fan, since the fan wouldnt change speeds when i moved my mouse over options in a menu :(

One way to see if you can actually identify just where the whining sound is coming from would be removing the side cover and listening as closely as you can by ear to pin point the source. If it isn't the cpu fan it could well be the supply's fan simply if there's no problem being seen with the drive itself.

I was hoping you wouldn't say that but you kind of get the drift as to what is likely on the way out on you. I would plan on seeing the drive go doa without warning at some time. It sounds like the spindle is starting to bind up on it. Is that the 80gb or the 320 seen in your sig?
