Hard Drive Failing?

My hard drive spins up and makes a single click every now and then. Is that normal because I never noticed it before. I have my 3yr old Samsung 160GB hd as my slave and my WD 1TB Caviar as my master, not exactly sure which one it is... but it's really annoying me and somewhat concerning me, any insight?

Nothing is sluggish or anything so I'm not sure what it is.

Most likely its the WD. Unplug samsung and see if the clicking continues.

It may or may not be a bad sign. It depends on the type of click and the frequency. When you are checking the drives, check for the sounds of one drive alternately starting up and shutting down abruptly.

In any case, make sure your drives are backed up just in case one of them dies.

I don’t know about Samsung but Western Digital do a utility you can download called Data Lifeguard. Go here and follow the links to select your hard disk and you’ll see the links for downloading the program.

If you download and run the utility if there’s a problem on the drive the program should return an error code. WD have a list of the error codes and their meanings on their website.

backup your critical data and then test each drive--it may be the WD that clicks--it is a sign that something is not right with one of the drives---It could be a power fluctuation--set both drives to different power connector and see-

I've unplugged the Samsung and it's stopped. Ran CHKDSK and didnt return anything on the WD'

Chkdsk won't find hardware problems. Pop the Samsung drive back on and try this.

i would of just left it and only sorted it out if the hardrive actully stops
