Hard Drive Help Needed!

I've just bought a Windows 7 64-bit laptop and I'm trying to transfer all my files from my old Windows XP laptop.

To do so I'm using an Iomega 320GB external USB harddrive.

The problem I'm having is this:

When moving files from the hard-drive to new laptop, about 1 in every 20 just stops copying half-way through.
The system will not let me cancel the copy nor eject the harddrive - I have to pull out the USB.
If I plug it in again and try again, the same thing happens with the same files.
If I try to open the files, it works fine.
If I plug the USB into my old computer, overwrite the file that causes the problem, and then try to move it to my new computer it works.

I've tried Tera Copy and chkdisk to no avail.
I can't go through by hand overwriting all the non-working files as I'm trying to move thousands of files, so it would take much too long.
The strange thing to me is that these files open perfectly, suggesting that they're not corrupted.

Does anyone have any ideas?

It sounds like something is wrong with your external drive. Can't you network the 2 together to transfer files? Do you have a router?

*This may or may not work*

Have you tried putting all the items you want into a zipped folder. Then what you are copying is simply one item instead of a directory with lots of items. you could then unzip when the zipped folder finally transferred over.

Hope this works
