hard drive help

I have a hard drive that I took out of my desktop that has all my music on it and a couple files that I need. I was wondering if there was a way I can get the info off it and on to my laptop or would I be able to make it a external hard drive and run it to my laptop so I have all my music still?
 
I purchased an exteral adapter cable that plugs into a USB port and connects to the hard drive. Then you open the hard drive just like a jump drive. I purchased the cable and power supply for around $30.00 from tiger direct a couple of years ago. Not sure of price now. Good Luck: MJM
