hey. i was wondering if there was anyway to hook a laptop drive up to a desktop computer to reformat it. it has a error that says "unmountable boot volume" and i tried talking to a computer guy about it and he said since it cant load windows then i need to fix it with the windows xp cd. but the problem is it keeps going to the safe mode screen and wont boot from a cd. so is there way way to hook it up to something else to reformat it?

yes... or you could put the winxp cd in the laptop, press f2 when the pc starts. then change the boot order so the cd boots first...

that's no fun....this way, you can take out a HD from your Laptop, and at least understand a thing or two about your comp.:) But in all seriousness, if you have the boot cd, then that would be a cheaper/faster way of doing things.

thats what i did. the whole f2 thing. but it went to the screen that asks if you want to start in safe mode first and it try to boot but it comes up with that error. so im all confused on what to do. its either i have to get a new hard drive which will set me back 60-70$ or try to reformat the one i have now

The button is usually f2... When the first picture comes up on the screen, run your finger down the f key line. The startup key could be any of them. Mostly likely f2, f5 or f8. This will load you to the bios. You change the boot order to boot from cd... And you wont need the boot disk as described above. (and you wont void your warranty if it is still in place)

i've done all that before. it still starts and goes to the safe mode screen before it boots and goes to windows because its been restarted so many times.
