Hard Drive install

I am trying to install a second hard drive in my desktop. the cable inside the computer to hook up the hard drives has two ends, "master"(black end) and "slave"(grey end). the cable has labels designating which is master and slave. the hard drive already installed is hooked up using the "slave"(grey) connector, and the "master"(black) end is free. obviously my second hard drive will only be used for storage, so it will be the slave drive. i don't assume the connector end matters, but i wanted to be sure. thanks.

The cable end matters. As you mentioned, the master is at the end, and the slave in the middle. Your harddrive will have pins at the back, that specify if it is to be Master, Slave or Cable Select. I would choose the latter option, and then plug the drive in the available slot (Master). The slave drive does not have to be for storage, they are just relative terms.

I think the ends only matter if you use cable select jumper settings on both drives.
