Hard Drive Issue: Reformatting a Mac to a PC

(I have Windows XP but the hard drive I ordered came formatted for Mac.)

+ I right clicked My Computer.
+ I clicked Manage which brought me to Computer Management.
+ I clicked Disk Management under Storage.

Here's where I'm stuck.

The Seagate website says, "Right click on the drive you want to format. Click the file system that you want to use in the File System box." I don't understand what this means. Right clicking on the drive didn't bring up anything that I could click on.

While roaming the internet I saw someone say, "Bottom line: Computer Management on a PC can't reformat a Mac-formatted drive."

I'm rather confused and would really appreciate any help!

So you have two drives, one with XP and another with a Mac OS and you want to format it? If so you need to delete the partition, make a new partition, then format it.

I ordered an external hard drive for my Dell Inspiron but the seller accidentally sent me a hard drive formatted for Mac. I know there's a way to reformat it but it's confusing me. I heard someone mention "making a new partition" but I don't know what that is or how to do it. Thank you for replying!

Why not contact the seller and say that they sent you the wrong one and try and get it either refunded, or get them to send out the correct one? Will save you all the trouble of having to reformat it?

If the seller is of any repute they will refund you, or send you the correct one, or both if your lucky!

Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Disk Management

From here you can see all of the hard drives installed and how they have been divided into partition. First, find the new drive and if there is a partition (you will see a drive letter to the right like "C:") right click and select delete volume. Then you can right click again and create a new volume formatted to FAT which will allow it to be seen and used from My Computer.
