Hard Drive issue

I have a Gigabyte GA-K8U-939 mobo. It currently has an 80gig IDE drive in it and I just picked up a WD 500gig sata drive I wanted to add to the system. When I installed the new drive it freezes up my system right when the windows spooling bar comes up.

I tried both sata ports and different sata power supplies. Same thing every time. I also went to bios and tried to detect the HD and when I have it detected it shows the drive but freezes up the system.

My neighbor has not tested out that WD 500 GB drive yet. But I did receive my WD 750 GB black yesterday for another build I am working on. I tried installing that with the same problem.

I looked at my mobo manual and there are only instructions to set sata up in raid. But there are bios settings for sata to be set to IDE. And that what I have it set to. And it also says it supports 150mbs not 300.

When I go into bios I see the WD 750 but when I try to have it recognized it freezes. And it does not matter which of the 2 sata ports I use.

Are you only having this problem with SATA drives? Do you have another brand you can try? I find it very unlikely that you got a bunch of bad WDs at the same time but I suppose it's possible.

I assume you've tried all the quick and easy usuals, I see you are trying to get a neighbour to test the drive, have you swapped cables and what not as well?

These are the only sata devices I have. I wouldn't think I have two bad hard drives. But then again stuff happens. I went to the WD website and they state I may have to set it up first in a raid array. Even if it is a single sata drive. I will try to figure this out when I get home today.

Yes I have used 3 different sata cables and different power supplies as well. When I have the mobo sata set to ide I can feel the HD spooling up. It just does not let windows open and reboots.

Either way I will try to do this raid deal.

Any hints on how to do this?
