I recently upgraded to a X2 and I have a problem with my hard drive and DVD drive now.

Specs are

Windows XP
7600GT 256mb GPU
2.3ghz X2 4400+ CPU
2gb G-Skill 6400 DDR2 Memory
VX450wat Corsair PSU
ECS A780GM-A Motherboard

Now my problem is and on a previous post did not pop up was I have a 2 hard drives that I have used for 3 years now a 2x120gb here is a picture of what I am talking about this is what I have.

the problem is it the board only comes with a single plug and both my hard drive AND my CD drive need to use it.
This REALLY puts a screwball on me I didn't see coming. Being my first build though everything else went without a hitch so I am pleased on that end.


Is there some form of adapter to make the HD work on the Serial ATA II connectors? I don't think im the first idiot to miss this and im sure they make something like it. Though I can only find power adapters trying to google but I don't know exactly what I am looking for.

Though on a side note the Am2 is nice...runs 10c on idle and 20 on high might over clock to 2.5ghz :D
 
If the new board sees only one ide channel it may be time for a sata optical drive or buying a pair of sata drives. The converters available are generally for using sata drives on ide cables not reverse. The option for an addon ide controller card would see the second drive available.
 
Well I found a solution to hook both hard drives up but I need a 1 more IDE connector to hook the DVD drive so I can use it.

There a add on that I can use that will work as a 2nd jack for it?
 
T_O_O just posted a link for an addon controller card as well as one for a dvd burner. The first link is for seeing what an addon card will look like as well as the model available there.
 
oh ok my bad I thought it was for the hard drive problem I was having.

Will have to call up local PC shop dont feel like waiting 5 days for it if I don't have too ^-^ thanks again!
 
One way around a controller card would be simply going for a sata rather then ide type optical drive. The specifications for the board you have there shows 5 sata ports available for use. http://www.ecs.com.tw/ECSWebSite/Pr...D=1&DetailName=Specification&MenuID=1&LanID=0

The prices for a new sata type dvd burner are much lower then seen at one time for optical drives. That would allow you to continue using the current ide hard drive without any extras. Ask your local shop on that.
 
Yeah I planned to do just that as well...after looking at tigerdirect/newegg I saw nothing but pissed off people on this card. Great idea but horrible performance.

I am gonna price check with my local PC store if its to out there will just order the first guys drive. Solves my problem either case. Thanks again :)

Ever thought about making your second HD as a external. Put it in a external exclosure and run it from your usb. Just a thought.
 
I ran two 250gb ide drives along with two 500gb satas and two optical drives altogether on the last build here without problems. For the present build I have a usb model but would have preferred an eSata connection for external. The usb type simply allows transferring large amounts of data and large files between different systems.

Most will prefer an external casing for file retrieval and when lacking space to see an addition drive added inside a smaller type of case. Have files left on the drive of an older build? Temp storage when upgrading a system with larger drives? Laptop user? That's where those generally see the most use.

T_O_O is the one to ask on how those work out since he uses laptops regularly. As far as pci cards many will likely complain about the slower pci bus over what they are accustomed to when trying to access things on an additional drive using that type of a addon card.
